Removing Scratches
from Hardwood Floors
Removing scratches or even gouges can be fairly easy. Depending
on how deep they are will determine if you should start sanding
with steel wool or sandpaper. You will want to use a grit
that will remove the scratch without cause and further damage
to the woods surface.
If the scratches have only penetrated the urethane you should
just use steel wool the remove them. If you have removed to
much urethane you may want to apply another coat (thin coats)
You may also want to bluff it after it has dried (to blend
it in. If you have scratches that dig into the wood you will
have to sand them out. Then you will have to re-stain and
then urethane.
Removing gouges from your hardwood floor may be a little
tougher. There are two things that may work for you. You can
fill them with a matching wood filler and then re-finish.
Or you can fill the gouge with urethane to smooth it out.
I suggest doing this with many coats, don't just pour it in
and hope it dries.
They also sell touch-up kits for urethane that will help
in remove scratches.
